Awareness

DEFINITION OF WASTE

Waste is any material which is no longer useful as it has served its purpose or at the end of the process has no further use and it is generally discarded. It is unwanted materials and objects that people have thrown away. It is often also called trash, garbage, rubbish, or junk

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT

When trash is disposed of properly, we are able to prevent less pollution in the air, which can help with improving public health. When you use proper liners and containers for your trash, you are preventing toxic materials from entering the environment. Proper waste disposal is critical due to the fact that certain types of wastes can be hazardous and can contaminate the environment if not handled properly. These types of waste also have the potential to cause diseases or get into water supplies.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WASTE SEGREGATION

Waste segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle. Effective segregation of waste means that less waste goes to landfill which makes it cheaper and better for people and the environment. It is also important to segregate for public health. If the waste is not separated properly, it all gets mixed up in landfills. The dangers of this is that they all leak after a period of time, resulting in leachate or toxic soup at the bottom, which can contaminate groundwater and release explosive methane gas.

SEGREGATION PROCESS

  • Identify categories that waste needs to be segregated into.
  • Procure separate bins for each separate segregation category.
  • Make sure that wet, dry, bio-medical and e-waste is segregated properly at source.
  • Dispose biodegradable waste with the local garbage trucks or begin a composting pit in your house garden.
  • The recyclable waste can be picked up on a weekly basis by various organizations that recycle waste.
  • Toxic waste if any must be isolated and disposed in a responsible manner depending on the kind of toxic waste.
  • Soiled waste must be sent to an incinerator.

Proper segregation of waste thus leads to a “circular economy” creating green jobs, reducing consumption of virgin resources and promoting investments and innovations. Furthermore as waste transportation reduces, emissions reduce; life of the landfill increases and risk to the ecosystem goes down.

THE 7 R’s WASTE MANAGEMENT

  • RETHINK
