Vermi compost

WHAT IS VERMI COMPOST?

It is the process in which certain species of earthworms (nature’s plowman) are used to convert organic materials (wastes) into a humus-like material. Earthworms process the material as quickly and efficiently as possible. They consume biomass and excrete it in digested from, which is called WORM CASTS; popularly knows as BLACK GOLD.

Vermi Composting process employs micro-organisms and worms to enhance the organic waste conversion process. Earthworms feed the organic waste materials , which then passes through their digestive system and comes out in a granular form called cocoons. This product is called VERMI COMPOST. It comes rich, black and earthy-smelling. Vermicompost makes a great feed for garden and container plants.

BENEFITS TO YOU:

  • You don’t have to rely on purchased inputs of nutrients. This, in turn, helps you cut down your cost of production.
  • Increased soil productivity as vermi compost improves soil quality.
  • It betters the quantity and quality of your crops.
  • You get to keep your surroundings healthy and clean by avoiding chemical fertilizers and herbicides.
  • You reduce your carbon footprint.

COMPOST BENEFITS TO OUR ENVIRONMENT :

  • Reduces the need for and use of chemical fertilizers that pollute the environment.
  • Prevents waste going to landfills and lessens the damage they do to the environment.
  • Chemical fertilizers bombard plants with huge amounts of nutrients. Rains eventually drain them out of the soil and the chemicals in them contaminate aquifers and drinking water.
  • Vermi compost as any other compost in general, does not get washed out of the soil. The nutrients are released slowly into the soil and are held in place for the plants to receive them when they need it over a prolonged period of time.
  • The product earthworms create behaves naturally and so is nature-friendly.
  • It promotes plant health for a longer duration than chemical fertlizers.
  • It helps the break away from the vicious cycle of regularly over-dosing the soil with artificial chemicals.
  • It improves the soil condition.
  • Increased microbial activity makes the area where plants that feed on vermi compost grow, more attractive to birds, which in turn, help remove plant pests.

BENEFITS TO PLANTS:

  • It is 100 percent organic. It does not need to be mixed with anything.
  • Improves biological, chemical and physical properties of the soil.
  • Worm castings (excrement) contain higher percentage of macro and micronutrients than garden compost.
  • Chemical secretions in the earthworm’s digestive tract help break down soil and organic matter.
  • The excrement of earthworms contain nutrients ideal for the growth of plants.
  • It suppresses diseases in plants. As vermi compost is enriched with bacteria and microbes, they help plants become disease-resistant and to repel plant pests.
  • It increases porosity, microbial activity in soil, improves water retention and aeration, which keeps your plants healthy.
  • It helps seeds germination, healthy root growth and crop yield.
  • The hormones that earthworm compost contains help the plants grow better.

SOCIAL BENEFITS:

  • As a wide range of agricultural residues such as straw, husk, leaves, stalks, weeds, livestock wastes, food processing wastes, organic fraction of MSW, bagasse and digestate from biogas can be converted into Vermi Compost, it helps keep our environment clean.
  • The volume of organic wastes that earthworms consume gets reduced to 40-60 per cent. This, in turn, helps manage our wastes efficiently and productively.
